A submod for Westeros: Total War designed to bring the look, the feel and the sounds of HBO's Game of Thrones to the world of Westeros. (Alas I have no affiliation with HBO) This submod is currently for version 0.53 of Westeros: Total War which is currently in Alpha stages but with a devoted mod team working hard to bring it to a full release. The submod is compatible with both the Standard (Vanilla) version of Westeros 0.53 and also the Enhanced version. It is highly recommended that you visit the official mod page at TWCenter.net to get precise details and installation help.

Greetings!

This is a small update of the GoT Retro Mod 2.0. Not a new release, the download page remains the same but the link has been updated. There are some small changes:

1. The main update is the implementation of the Oppida view settlement mod created by Alpaca many years ago. Basically this is a script that allows the player to have a view at his own settlements on the battle map without the need to go to battle.
I believe it is very appropriate for the GoT Retro Mod at this point, with so many custom settlements.

Let me show you how it works. I’m going to run the script for the Twins (western castle). The first step is to open the construction scroll for the settlement. On that scroll, you have to click on "Locate position of settlement" (point 1) which will open an advisor asking you whether you want to view the city on the battle map or not.

If you click on "Show me how" (point 2), you will immediately be taken to the battle screen. You'll have to start the battle as normal (start deployment, then start battle).

0004

Afterwards you can have a view at the settlement and roam freely around it. Don’t worry the rebel army won’t attack you.

0005

When you're all done, you simply press Esc and the battle will end after a short while. You will win the battle but don't worry, the trait triggers won't react to that, also nothing will change on the campaign map either.

0006

ATTENTION:
1. Don’t hurry and exit the battle, otherwise you will lose it and your general/s will get killed and you may also lose the settlement to the rebels. Just press Esc and wait for a few seconds until you get the message about the battle being over.
2. For some factions like Starks, Greyjoys, Baratheons etc. the advisor won’t show up for the “View Settlement” before you declare your Kingship. It seems it is related to the priorities related to the advisor in the campaign map. But afterwards you can use the script as many times as you like.
3. This script works just for the custom settlements in the Retro Submod. You will get the message from the advisor for any settlement after pressing "Locate position of settlement" but once you press "Show me how", nothing is going to happen if you have selected a vanilla settlement.

2. There are 3 new custom settlements from Peaman’s Fire & Blood added to the Retro Submod 2.0, namely: Gulltown, The Arbor and Pentos.
Same as all the custom settlements imported from there, these 3 were also coded by Mr. Nygren, but they wouldn’t work properly without me slightly editing the map. Now they should work just fine. The Dothraki villages also got their own custom model, but nothing huge, they are villages after all.

3. Updated the Victory Conditions for a few factions, if the player chooses to declare his Kingship. Since the old Enhanced version, the Lannisters, Tullies, Arryns, Tyrells and Martells could declare their kingship on certain conditions. Unlike the Starks, Greyjoys or Baratheons, this option is not available to the AI. Therefore I updated their victory conditions in case the player decides to go for the Kingship.

0007

4. There are some new models for the Stark officers and some custom heroes like Eddard Stark or Kevan Lannister, simply to add more variations. It is about small bits or pieces of armour created by Vltima Ratio back in 2016.
There are also two new units. House Greyjoy gets access to the Ironborn Cavalry, an axe/mace wielding medium cavalry, basically mounted raiders. They differ from the Greyjoy Cavalry (spears & swords) which is simply a household unit now, same as the cavalry and knights of the other Great Houses.
The Lannisters get their own version of the Wildfire Thrower, with a unique model. Available only in the Alchemist Guild at King’s Landing.
For the Others/White Walkers, the Undead Bear isn’t its own unit anymore. Now they are simply mounts for the White Walkers, stronger and more effective.

5. There are some smaller edits in the descr_strat, campaign_script etc. for balance reasons. These came after some playtesting from me. Perhaps we will need more.

That's all for now, if you have any questions please write us on Discord: Discord.gg

Please integrate Fire and Blood in your mod. The dev of that mod is hopeless.

Fire & Blood originally started in 2018 if I recall right as a continuation of GoT Enhanced (this mod, and the mod that the RetroSubmod is based on), but became stand-alone because Peaman (its creator) had his own ideas and so what started as me and him cooperating ended with him going his own way.

At first his mod used the very same assets as GoT Enhanced. But then he learnt how to rig his own models and make his own custom settlements/cities and made a very unique mod in his own style, replacing many of the shared assets.

It isn't possible to "integrate his mod" into GoT Enhanced as there are limits to everything from unit numbers, map size, the number of factions and so on.

But as Firestorm stated he does allow us to use his assets, but even so porting his entire mod wouldn't be possible.

What would be possible is maybe make additional campaigns but it's unlikely we would do that.

The developer of Fire and Blood is quite a great modder and a wonderful person. He has been very generous and shared all of his assets with us and he is free to use all our assets. You will find a lot from Fire and Blood in the Retro Mod. In any case, GoT Retro Mod (and Enhanced) will remain different from Fire and Blood. My aim is to create an original GoT mod based on the TV show. Otherwise I would join Fire & Blood, Peaman already told me that I was most welcomed on his team.

Yes, you're keeping the mod stable whilst adding a lot of polish and new gameplay features, so in essence I think you're competent enough to continue GoT Enhanced, as opposed to someone who wouldn't manage to keep it stable.

The success of the mod is also due to the current "House of the Dragon" TV-show, but I think the main reason for this mod being more popular than Fire & Blood is the stability.

So I don't have a problem with your submod being the official mod going forward. I'm also a bit tired of modding and have other mods too. Which is why it fir perfectly that someone competent would continue GoT Enhanced.

What are the main differences between the Retro Mod and the Enhanced versions?

The main reason the RetroSubmod is separate is because of the different map.

When it comes to the map, all the versions of GoT Enhanced used a really small map shared with Westeros 0.53 since 2011 and until 2021.

In 2021 in February/March/May a new version was released called 5.5 or 5.6 - it added multiple new things including over 72 heroes with custom models from the show, and a huge new map from a cancelled project made by SoulGamesInc - it's more impressive in my opinion, as opposed to the map in use by the RetroMod which is originally from the German Westeros mod.

Firestorm preferred the later map because of gameplay, as the other was a bit too big. The map in 5.6 is also reduced in size compared to the original one, but is still large - reduced in the numbers of settlements, as this was a compromise between me and Firestorm as he didn't like too large maps.

I'd say originally that the map was the only difference, but over time Firestorm has polished the RetroSubmod with amasing new events, scripts, polishing..

5.6 is pretty much a beta and Firestorms RetroSubmod is something much more finished. That's why development on 5.7 dried up because I would need to do everything that FireStorm has done to challenge his mod.

FireStorm's submod also has all those custom settlements by Peaman that me and him added this year, whilst 5.6 doesn't have that - it only has the old Westeros 1.0 custom settlements.

There is a 5.7 in development that is currently on hiatus, and there is the cancelled GoT Enhanced 5.5 with the original huge map by SoulGamesInc before it was made smaller, and which also includes the old gameplay of GoT Enhanced 3.0-5.0 - as 5.5 and 5.6 were actually remade versions were Firestorm added everything from scratch onto a new map, and then I did a lot of stuff too for it.

The old version was a bit different, and I still have a backup of that, it was cancelled in favor of a different version because we failed to add scripts to it. The scripts wouldn't work. But I've solved that issue this year.

In any case, it would be a lot of modding required to reach the polish of Firestorm's mod. So that's why it's not a priority.

I'd recommend FireStorm's submod as the more finished and polished product.

If you want a more sandbox experience with a better looking map play 5.6. But it will feel less completed with less polish.

Both mods share a lot of stuff but also have key differences, starting from the map. Each mod has its own map. After Mr. Nygren and me completed GoT 5.5 and 5.6, I decided to create the Retro Mod. I started using models and textures created by our artist Vltima Ratio in 2016 and early 2017, as I liked them more than the newer ones. I re-introduced a lot of scripts from the old Westeros/GoT mods such as the Shadow Assassin, the Night's Watch's plead for help, the Iron Bank and the Faceless Men. And many more. Now the Retro Mod is heavily scripted while GoT 5.6 is more a sandbox gameplay. Both are very good, it depends on what you prefer.

I really love that mod, but the modder can't fix the crashing issues. So many updates but the issue isn't resolve.

By editing a few files, it is possible. But that faction wasn't meant to be playable on this mod. It has a very slow start and a steady growth as the game goes on. Later they become almost unstoppable.
